It seems I get asked often- How does the relationship between Chase and PRL work? Well… let’s talk about that for a minute. Distribution was roughly $3.8 million of 2014 sales. Chase was responsible for $2.6 million of that number.

Chase Plastic Services is based out of Clarkston, Michigan and currently has about 40 sales reps throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Each of those reps is able to pick and choose who they want to use for suppliers unless the customer specifies a particular suppliers material. Having a good relationship goes a long way with a Chase sales rep. When a rep contacts me for a quote I look to see if their customer is buying direct from PRL already and if so, are they buying the material for that quote. I will then call our sales person to see if they’ve quoted that material and what they quoted for pricing. This doesn’t happen often and usually stays direct.

Once the quote is given to the Chase rep it can take a couple weeks to get feedback if an order wasn’t pending. We are starting to see more and more quotes turn into actual orders. Several of the Chase reps have large programs that are consistent business with PRL:

  • Scott Saxton: B & B- TP FR G30 1001 and two custom colors, PC G20 HF 1001
  • Bill Guenvuer: GTM- PPX FR G30 7001 and PPX G30 7001
  • Chelsea Barriga: Ideal – TP FR IM 7001 and a custom blue
  • Andrea Gear: Co Tronics- PC GP2-D 7001P
  • Mark Smith: Euro Plast- PC/ABS GP2 Custom Blue and a few PC/ABS FR1 custom colors
  • Imperial Plastics– PC/ABS FR1 1001

For the next year, I am working to continue to build the relationship with each Chase sales rep and grow the account to $3.0 million. This is a plan Chase is on board with and I look forward to the challenge!

Our 2015-2016 Wellness Incentive Program

Employees and their covered spouses enrolled in Polymer Resources’ 2015-2016 medical and prescription plan must comply with a two-part incentive to get receive the HRA bonus:

1. Preventive Care Campaign

Employees and their covered spouses must have an annual preventive care visit with their physician and have the Physician Attestation form completed and submitted to Human Resources between October 1st, 2014 and October 1st, 2015. The Preventive Care visit is paid at 100% and will be no cost to you. (Refer to your Aetna plan summary to find out exactly what preventive care services are no cost to you.)

Our Preventive Care Campaign is designed to assist our employees and their spouses in achieving the best possible health. Developing a relationship with your physician can be the first step and having an annual physical helps you stay in control of your health. It can be difficult to get an appointment with your doctor so schedule your preventive care visit today! If you do not have a doctor, use the ‘find a doc’ tools on www.aetna.com.

Bring your Attestation Form to your doctor visit for completion. The form must be signed and submitted to Human Resources no later than October 1st, 2015 to qualify for the wellness incentive.

2. Aetna’s Simple Steps Health Risk Assessment

Employees and their covered spouses must complete a simple Health Risk Questionnaire between October 1st, 2014 and October 1st, 2015. Aetna’s Simple Steps is a convenient and secure online health questionnaire which will show you where your health may be at risk and suggestions to lead a healthier life. You answer a series of questions about your health, lifestyle and family history. This should only take about 15-20 minutes.

To complete your Simple Steps Health Risk Assessment, you will log onto www.aetna.comand click on Aetna Navigator Member Log In. You will need to print off the Completion Certification for verification of your Health Assessment completion and submit it to Human Resources by no later than October 1st, 2015.

Both a completed Simple Steps Health Risk Assessment and completed Physician Attestation are required from the employee and their covered spouse to qualify for enrollment in Polymer Resources’ “Bonus” HRA for the 2015-2016 plan year.

Polymer Resources Physical Activity Reimbursement Plan

At Polymer Resources, we believe that the health and well-being of our people has a direct and important connection to the vitality and success of our company. Our leadership team is committed to developing a culture of wellness and good health throughout our organization. All employees are strongly encouraged to consult with a physician before beginning a physical activity program.

Option 1: Health Club of Employee’s Choice:

  • All employees are eligible for a reimbursement up to $20 per month if they utilize their gym of choice at least eight (8) times in a month.
  • A copy of the gym contract with the monthly charge will need to be submitted to Human Resources for verification.
  • Employees need to submit their monthly gym reimbursement form along with their gym’s utilization report to Human Resources to qualify for the reimbursement. If the gym does not have an automated utilization process, the employee will need to keep a personal log of their utilization and have it signed by a qualified representative at the gym. Once verified, it will go to Finance for reimbursement.

Option 2: Individual Fitness/Exercise/Martial Arts Classes:

  • All employees are eligible for a reimbursement of up to 50% of the cost of the fitness/exercise/martial art classes if they attend at least eight (8) times within a month OR up to 25% of the cost of the class if they attend any fitness/wellness classes four (4) times within a month.
  • A copy of the class registration with the monthly charge will need to be submitted to Human Resources for verification.
  • Employees need to submit their monthly gym reimbursement form along with their gym’s utilization report to Human Resources to qualify for the reimbursement. If the gym does not have an automated utilization process, the employee will need to keep a personal log of their utilization and have it signed by a qualified representative at the gym. Once verified, it will go to Finance for reimbursement.

You may choose more than one option!

SAFETY : Moving Snow

Now that winter is here, we have to deal with snow. Removal of snow will keep us all busy during the winter months. It is a good idea to think about safety when moving snow about.

Snow has to be removed from walkways and from driveways. This must be done not only to make it easier to get about, but also to uncover any icy spots under the snow. Stepping on a snow covered icy patch can lead a fall. So like it or not, we have to clear snow.

Small amounts of light snow can be easily be swept away with a broom. That is a pretty safe activity. As snow deepens, shoveling is required. We should keep in mind that snow shoveling is a strenuous activity, and it becomes more strenuous as snow becomes deeper.

As with all strenuous activities, it is a good idea to warm up before beginning. Stretch out muscles in the back and in the arms before heading out to shovel. Strenuous activities are not for everyone. People with heart problems should think twice before undertaking a big snow shoveling job. And healthy people should keep an eye on people that might be overcome by snow shoveling. It is not uncommon for people to get hear attacks when shoveling snow.

Regardless of your state of health, snow shoveling should be done carefully. There is no prize for completing a snow shoveling job in “record time”. Shovel loads should be moderate in order to avoid strain. Use your arms and legs when shoveling, and try not to put too much strain on your back. Strain can be reduced by leveraging the handle of the snow shovel on your leg. Do not try to toss shovel loads of snow a long distance, and try to avoid twisting the body when shoveling. For big snow shoveling jobs, it is a good idea to take breaks, and to drink some water. Sometimes there is just too much snow to shovel. In those cases, either a snow blower or a snowplow is a valuable asset.

Many people own their own snow blower. These machines reduce the physical strain involved in removing snow. Safety is an important factor in operating a snow blower. Snow blowers need powerful motors, and those motors are noisy. Since a snow blowing job can take an hour or more, it is a good idea to wear ear plugs when operating a snow blower. It is also a good idea to dress warmly when operating a snow blower.

As the name implies, snow blowers can blow snow quite a ways. Be aware of where the snow is going when operating a snow blower. Rocks, sticks, and other objects can be blown along with the snow. Be careful that the snow stream does not hit somebody, or a window.

Every now and again, a snow blower may jam up with too much snow. Never try to clean a jam out with your hands or feet. Even though the auger or the impeller are not turning, assume that they could start up at any time. Use a wooden stick, such as a broom handle or a hockey stick, to remove a snow jam. Most snow blowers have a lever on the main handle that must be held during operation. If this lever is released during operation, then the motor will stop. This is an important safety control, and should never be overridden.

When all else fails, hire someone to remove the snow for you. There are many snow plowing services available. Remember that momentum is an important factor in operating a snow plow. So keep a distance when someone is plowing snow for you.

Winter only lasts a few months. Take a few precautions removing snow, and before you know it spring will be here.

The Little Seed with a Big Nutrition

Flaxseed has been a part of human and animal diets for thousands of years. Even in the days of Hippocrates, flaxseed was eaten for its health benefits. Recently, however, flaxseed has gained popularity among health-conscious Americans. Despite the hype surrounding this little seed, a lot of people have never heard of it. It may not exactly be a wonder food, but flaxseed certainly has nutritional benefits.

Nutritional Benefits

Flaxseeds contain the following nutrients:

Lignans.

Flaxseeds are one of the best plant sources for lignans, a type of phytoestrogen that may protect against certain types of cancer, including breast cancer and prostate cancer. Even the National Cancer Institute has identified its cancer-fighting potential.

Omega-3 fatty acids.

Flaxseeds are the best plant source of healthy omega-3’s, which are also found in fish. Fifty grams of flaxseed has about the same amount of omega-3’s as three pounds of salmon!

Fiber.

Flaxseeds contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, which keep the digestive system in tip-top shape.

Protein.

Flaxseed is a complete protein source, meaning that it contains every amino acid that your body can’t make on its own. It’s uncommon to find plant-based foods that are complete proteins, so flaxseed makes a great addition to vegetarian diets.

One tablespoon of flaxseed contains:

  • 35 to 40 calories
  • 1.6 grams of protein
  • 2.8 grams of carbohydrate
  • 2.8 grams of fat (0.3 grams saturated, 0.6 grams monounsaturated, and 1.8 grams polyunsaturated)
  • 2.5 to 8 grams of fiber
  • 3 milligrams of sodium

Health Benefits

  • Research shows that flaxseed may have the ability to:
  • Prevent cancer and reduce tumor growth in the breasts, prostate and colon
  • Decrease the risks of developing heart disease, blood clots, strokes, and cardiac arrhythmia by lowering total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure
  • Regulate bowel functions and prevent constipation
  • Relieve breast pain related to a woman’s hormonal cycle
  • Help improve blood glucose control in diabetics
  • Help reduce inflammation associated with arthritis, Parkinson’s disease and asthma

Flaxseed Types

Most grocery stores do sell packaged flaxseed on their shelves, but natural foods stores tend to also offer sell flaxseeds in bulk form too. There are two “types” of flaxseed: brown and golden. Although the color and price differ, the nutritional benefits are the same. The brown flaxseed is less expensive than the golden, but because golden flaxseed is lighter in color, it’s easier to hide in a variety of foods.

Most stores sell flaxseed in three different forms:

Whole flaxseeds. You’ll find golden or brown flaxseeds in bulk bins or pre-packaged. This is the most economical way to purchase flaxseeds. These will store well for long time because the seed is intact. But to get the benefits of flaxseed, it must be ground before use (or chewed thoroughly). You can grind flaxseeds in a specialty flaxseed grinder (found at specialty kitchen stores or online), food processor, coffee grinder, or blender. Once ground, it must be stored in an air-tight, opaque container in the refrigerator or freezer. You can add whole flaxseeds to almost any food,even when baking.

Ground flaxseed. Also called “flaxseed meal,” you’ll find pre-packaged golden and brown varieties on the grocery shelf or refrigerated section—but not in bulk form. Ground flaxseed is slightly more expensive than whole flaxseed. Ground flaxseed is highly perishable when exposed to air and light, and it goes bad quickly. Buying ground flaxseed saves you the step of grinding the seeds yourself, but it must be stored in an air-tight and opaque container in the refrigerator or freezer after opening. You can add ground flaxseed to almost any food, even when cooking and baking.

Flaxseed oil. You’ll find flax oil in opaque bottles in the refrigerated section or sometimes in capsules. Both flaxseed oil in a bottle and flaxseed oil capsules are considered to be “supplements,” not “foods.” Flaxseed oil and capsules is the most expensive way to purchase flaxseed. The oil is even more perishable than ground flaxseed and goes back quickly when exposed to air, light and heat. You can add flaxseed oil to many foods, but do NOT heat it or cook with it. Heat will cause flaxseed oil to go rancid and destroy its healthy properties. Only add flaxseed oil to chilled foods (like smoothies, salad dressings, yogurt, etc.) or to foods after cooking.

Serving Suggestions

Smooth and flat, the little seeds have a nutty taste. Keep in mind that a little bit goes a long way. In general, consuming 1-2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed each day is considered safe for most adults. But it is possible to eat too much flaxseed. Some studies have shown nutrient and drug interactions when consumption reaches or exceeds 1/4 cup daily, so discuss this with your doctor and pharmacist. A small number of people may have an allergic reaction to flaxseed; therefore start with 1/2 teaspoon to see if an allergic reaction occurs.

More studies are needed to determine flaxseed’s effects in pregnant and breastfeeding women, but most researchers feel that 1 tablespoon daily is probably safe for this population. Check with your physician first. Studies have shown that lignans in flaxseed antagonize the action of some drugs (including tamoxifen) used by breast cancer patients. In addition, the NIH states that flaxseed may interfere with blood thinners, muscle relaxers, and medications for acid reflux. Flaxseed can also be troublesome for people with diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Flaxseed can add flavor, texture and nutrients to almost any food!

  • Sprinkle ground flaxseed on cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, salads, and coleslaw
  • Enhance cold dressings, yogurts, sauces and smoothies with flaxseed oil
  • Mix ground flaxseed into meatloaf and meatballs
  • Add whole flaxseeds to granola bars, muffins and other baked goods
  • Add ground flaxseeds to pancake, muffin, cookie batter and other baked goods
  • Add ground flaxseeds to fish or chicken coating and oven-fry
  • Sprinkle ground flaxseed on casseroles, sauces, soups and stews

Thanks to all of your efforts our ISO Auditor, Dave Tufano, gave us totally clean bill of quality health on 2/12/15. For the first time ever we had no nonconforming audit findings. Dave also announced that his next audit on August 10, 2015 will be his last visit to PRL. He has decided to focus his audit activities to just the aircraft industry. This means a new auditor in 2016.

After reviewing the January data he again offered his congratulation’s on our quality performance. He commented that we have come a long way in the last few years.
